  • Pastoral Dynamo : From The Perspective Of Saint John Neumann

    $12.99

Imagined in the first person and accompanied by excerpts from letters written by Saint John Neumann, the story of a poor immigrant reaches worlds beyond his Bohemian birthplace. From an early age he knew that missionary work in North America was his calling.

In less than 20 years as a Redemptorist priest in the new, young country he served the North American Province, was ordained Bishop of Philadelphia, and laid the foundation for the Catholic school system in the United States. All across the northeastern U.S., Bishop Neumann oversaw the establishment churches, parishes, and schools as the population expanded rapidly. The first Sisters of St. Francis professed their vows before the bishop to begin their medical and educational ministries that still serve the needs of others.

  • 12 Prophets: Volume 1

    $44.95

There is generally no common material that binds together the works of the individual prophets that comprise the Twelve, but through Sweeney’s commentary they stand together as a single, clearly defined book among the other prophetic books of the Bible. The Book of the Twelve Prophets is a multifaceted literary composition that functions simultaneously in all Jewish and Christian versions of the Bible as a single prophetic book and as a collection of twelve individual prophetic books. Each of the twelve individual books – Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi – begins with its own narrative introduction that identifies the prophet and provides details concerning the historical setting and literary characteristics. In this manner each book is clearly distinguished from the others within the overall framework of the Twelve.By employing a combination of literary methodologies, such as reader response criticism, canonical criticism, and structural form criticism, Sweeney establishes the literary structure of the Book of the Twelve as a whole, and of each book with their respective ideological or theological perspectives.

An introductory chapter orients readers to questions posed by reading the Book of the Twelve as a coherent piece of literature and to a literary overview of the Twelve. Sweeney then treats each of the twelve individual prophetic books in the order of the Masoretic canon, providing a discussion of each one’s structure, theme, and outlook. This is followed by a detailed literary discussion of the textual units that comprise the book.

  • Cardiologist Examines Jesus

    $19.95

The Gospels might not be “good enough” for modernity, and science is certainly its god. But neither is an impediment to the one, true God. Indeed, He is using methods of the twenty-first century — His twenty-first century — to show how our Faith can be proven through Eucharistic miracles with clinical scientific precision. In this astounding book, prominent cardiologist and author Dr. Franco Serafini walks us through the extensive medical and scientific research into five Eucharistic miracles, unveiling the stunning testimonies of hematologists, oncologists, neurologists, geneticists, molecular biologists, and more who all concluded the same thing: the five Eucharistic miracles are undeniably authentic. In surprising and fascinating ways, each of these miracles relates to the others: all reveal heart muscle tissue, many reveal a heart that was experiencing extreme suffering, and some reveal a heart still enduring tissue trauma. You’ll learn how the human DNA found in Eucharistic substances was identified, what kept a revered eighth-century relic alive until the twenty-first century, and how the identical blood group recurred in the unique miracles to provide contemporary man with a thrilling statistical fortress. Best of all, you’ll be armed with the scientific data to prove not only that God is still active in the world but that He desires all of us to be in union with Him through His Most Precious Body and Blood.

  • Diverse Yet United

    $15.95

As disciples of Jesus Christ, we are called to dialogue and encounter. We are expected to be welcoming and open to all people, including those who think differently from us or who hold conflicting opinions. We are also called to share the Truth, which is God’s love for us in Jesus Christ.

“[Jesus] asks us not to fix our gaze on what divides us, but rather on what unites us, seeking to know and love Jesus better and to share the richness of his love,” Pope Francis writes in Diverse yet United: Communicating Truth in Charity.

Jesus’ love spurs us to dialogue, helping us to listen to one another and to get to know others. His love becomes the foundation of human solidarity and renders us capable of overcoming the barriers of our own weaknesses and prejudices. Jesus’ love within us creates bridges, teaches new paths, and triggers the dynamism of fraternity.

Pope Francis invites us to communicate the Lord’s merciful love to the whole world: “We too are given the gift of the ‘tongue’ of the Gospel and the ‘fire’ of the Holy Spirit, so that as we proclaim the risen Jesus, alive and present among us, we may warm our hearts and the hearts of peoples, bringing them closer to him, the way, the truth, and the life.”

  • Blue Collar Apologetics

    $19.95

Most of us know what we believe as Catholics, but often we’re unclear on why we believe it. At a time when vast numbers of Catholics are slipping away from the Faith, God has tasked you and countless other Catholics with understanding it so you will be prepared to defend it.

With an easygoing and inviting style, EWTN’s John Martignoni doesn’t simply introduce you to the major doctrines of the Catholic Faith; he explains why they are true and shows you how to explain them effectively to Protestants and “cafeteria Catholics” alike in ways that will draw them into those truths.

Far from a complex survey of obscure theological points, this lively book employs clear, simple language that not only demonstrates the fundamental fact that the Bible is a Catholic book, but also teaches Catholics how to “talk Bible” to non-Catholics. When you are done with this book, you will know the biblical basis for the Church’s teachings on the sacraments, Purgatory, Mary, the papacy, and why salvation requires faith and works. You’ll also be versed in the strategies for effectively challenging others to examine their beliefs in light of the overwhelming scriptural evidence for Catholicism.

Blue Collar Apologetics will also teach you:

*How to go on the offensive without being offensive

*The rules of engagement for discussing the faith with others

*Four techniques that will allow you to talk to anyone about your faith

*An easy tactic anyone can use for engaging non-Catholics

*How to explain the Marian dogmas using the Bible and common sense

*The two key “pillars of Protestantism” — and how to respond to each

*How to counter the ingrained Protestant maxim “Once saved, always saved”

*The basics of Eastern Orthodoxy, which every Catholic needs to master

*Effective, common sense tactics for defending the Faith against atheist attacks

This book empowers the average person in the pews?even those who might not know where Genesis is in the Bible!?to engage in evangelization and “talk Bible,” even with the most learned Baptist minister.

  • Ezra And Nehemiah

    $29.95

Ezra-Nehemiah has been neglected in biblical studies, but it is important as one of the few windows into the Persian period of Israel’s history, the setting for so much of the final shape of the Hebrew Bible. To know this period is to know what influenced these redactors. In Ezra and Nehemiah Gordon Davies provides that knowledge using rhetorical criticism, a methodology that reveals the full range and progress of the book’s ideas without hiding its rough seams and untidy edges.

The purpose of rhetorical criticism is to explain not the source but the power of the text as a unitary message. This approach does not look at plot development, characterization, or other elements whose roughness makes Ezra-Nehemiah frustrating to read. Instead, it examines the three parts of the relationship – the strategies, the situations, and the ffects – between the speaker and the audience. Rhetorical criticism’s scrutiny of the audience in context favors the search for the ideas and structures that are indigenous to the culture of the text.

Rhetorical criticism is interested in figures of speech as means of persuasion. Therefore, to apply it to Ezra-Nehemiah, Davies concentrates on the public discourse – the orations, letters, and prayers – throughout its text. In each chapter he follows a procedure that: (1) where it is unclear, identifies the rhetorical unit in which the discourse is set; (2) identifies the audiences of the discourse and the rhetorical situation; (3) studies the arrangement of the material; (4) studies the effect on the various audiences; (5) reviews the passage as a whole and judges its success. In the conclusion, Davies explains that Ezra-Nehemiah makes theological sense on its own terms, by forming a single work in which a range of ideas is argued.

Biblical scholars as well as those interested in literary criticism, communication studies, rhetorical studies, ecclesiology, and homiletics will find Ezra and Nehemiah enlightening.

  • 40 Parables Of Jesus

Jesus’ parables speak in bold images of the kingdom of God, making it present to us as they reveal something of the mystery of his own person.

Lohfink also offers a review of some of the scholarship in this area-as this topic has sustained research on Jesus since the first telling of these stories-but not for the purposes of debate. His reflections interpret the forty parables and show how they speak of the coming of the reign of God, lead us to Jesus, and reveal the mystery of Jesus himself.

  • Life Of Jesus Christ

How often have you heard the Gospel at Sunday Mass and wondered, “What happens next?” Often, our only experience of the Gospels is of those isolated segments taken out of context, like unassembled pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, rather than the story of our Savior’s life.

The Life of Jesus Christ: Understanding the Story of the Gospels aims to change that experience. Author Russell Shaw weaves together the events of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John’s narratives in chronological order to capture a true and rounded picture of Jesus’ life.

The Life of Jesus Christ is the scriptural companion you’ve been searching for. Together, the four Gospels reveal Jesus Christ, God Incarnate, as a man of complexity and depth – compassionate but stern, who knew how to laugh and how to cry, a charismatic leader uninterested in worldly power, a subtle thinker who drew sublime messages from ordinary life. With Shaw guiding you, you’ll truly get to know the Son of God in a new way.

  • Losing Our Dignity

    $22.95

There is perhaps no more important value than fundamental human equality. And yet, despite large percentages of people affirming the value, the resources available to explain and defend the basis for such equality are few and far between. In his newest book Charles Camosy provides a thoughtful defense of human dignity.

Telling personal stories like those of Jahi McMath, Terri Schiavo, and Alfie Evans, Camosy, a noted bioethicist and theologian, uses an engaging style to show how the influence of secularized medicine is undermining fundamental human equality in the broader culture. And in a disturbing final chapter, Camosy sounds the alarm about the next population to fall if we stay on our current trajectory: dozens of millions of human beings with dementia.

Heeding this alarm, Camosy argues, means doing two things. First, making urgent and genuine attempts to dialogue with a secularized culture which cannot see how it is undermining one of its most foundational values. Second, religious communities which hold the Imago Dei sacred must mobilize their existing institutions (and create new ones) to care for a new set of human beings our throwaway culture may deem non-persons.

  • Art Of Indigenous Inculturation

    $30.00

This breathtakingly beautiful, scholarly, and thought-provoking book is basically about one thing: doing justice to the incarnation. It is the doctrine that confesses not only that God became human, but that God became flesh, became material, thereby signifying the holiness of all God’s creation. It is with this conviction that Antonio Sison embarks on a quest to ‘midwife’ the ‘indigenous inculturation’ present in a triptych of images from the ‘folk Catholic imaginary’ in Nairobi in Kenya, Chicago in the United States, and Manila in the Philippines. His purpose is, with a rich hermeneutic of suspicion, generosity, and serendipity, to bring the edges of theologizing to the center. In doing so, however, he reveals to us that, instead of a new theological hegemony (marginal replacing the center), the edges are actually the center.–From the Foreword by Stephen B. Bevans, SVD

As both a family man and the Executive Director of the Passionist Earth & Spirit Center in Kentucky, Kyle Kramer knows that struggle. In Making Room he writes not only as an eco-spiritual expert but also as a fellow pilgrim on the journey toward simplicity, which he defines as the choices that create the freedom to honor our own deepest needs, the concentric circles of human relationships, and God’s gifts of the natural world.
