  • Origins Of Feasts Fasts And Seasons In Early Christianity

    $34.95

The liturgical year is a relatively modern invention. The term itself only came into use in the late sixteenth century. In antiquity, Christians did not view the various festivals and fasts that they experienced as a unified whole. Instead, the different seasons formed a number of completely unrelated cycles and tended to overlap and conflict with one another. In early Christianity, the fundamental cycle was that of the seven-day week. Taken over from Judaism by the first Christians, this was centered on Sunday rather than the sabbath. As the early Church established its identity, the days of the week set aside for fasting came to be different from those customary among the Jews. There also existed an annual cycle related to Easter.

Drawing upon the latest research, the authors track the development of the Church’s feasts, fasts, and seasons, including the sabbath and Sunday, Holy Week and Easter, Christmas and Epiphany, and the feasts of the Virgin Mary, the martyrs, and other saints.

  • True And False Reform In The Church

    $39.95

Archbishop Angelo Roncalli (later Pope John XXIII) read True and False Reform during his years as papal nuncio in France and asked, “A reform of the church-is such a thing really possible?” A decade later as pope, he opened the Second Vatican Council by describing its goals in terms that reflected Congar’s description of authentic reform: reform that penetrates to the heart of doctrine as a message of salvation for the whole of humanity, that retrieves the meaning of prophecy in a living church, and that is deeply rooted in history rather than superficially related to the apostolic tradition. Pope John called the council not to reform heresy or to denounce errors but to update the church’s capacity to explain itself to the world and to revitalize ecclesial life in all its unique local manifestations. Congar’s masterpiece fills in the blanks of what we have been missing in our reception of the council and its call to “true reform.”

  • To The Cross And Beyond

Like the first disciples, we walk with Jesus, hearing his words and witnessing his miracles as we journey to the Cross.

To the Cross and Beyond takes us through Jesus’ final days on earth as recounted in the Sundays of Lent and Easter. David O. Bales explores some of the gospel’s best-known moments as Jesus journeys to Jerusalem and, ultimately, to the Cross and then the empty tomb.

  • Show And Tell Cycle A

    $14.95

In each of Sunday’s assigned lectionary readings — The First, Second, and Gospel lessons — we are invited to view the glorious narrative of scripture through three different, yet harmonious, perspectives. In the first reading, the congregation returns to the heritage of our faith as described in the Old Testament, as well as in the New Testament book of Acts. We travel with the children of Israel as they take their first steps in faith, reliving the highs and lows of that journey with them. Through studying this part of scripture, we can see our own journey of faith played out by an entire nation.

Show-and-Tell guides us through some of the earliest accounts in the Bible in Genesis and Exodus, as well as the prophetic words of Isaiah and Ezekiel. During the Easter season, the first readings also explore the beginnings of Christianity as recounted in Acts. By taking us back to the beginning, Dr. Everett offers insight and encouragement into how we can live out our faith today.

This collection of sermons is a valuable resource for:
    Sermon starters and illuminating illustrations
Gaining a new homiletical perspective to the lectionary
Offering a newer, deeper understanding and appreciation of scripture
Using as a starter for adult Bible study groups or personal devotions

    Sermons in this volume include:

  • Sign Of The Cross

    $17.99

Millions of Christians around the world use the sign of the Cross-and have done so for centuries-as a gesture of blessing. It is practiced when alone, during worship, before sleep, upon waking, before eating, before travel, and many other times throughout the day. But, what does it mean? Where did it originate? What did the sign of the Cross mean to the first Christians, and how has this simple movement of the hand evolved over the centuries?

The sign of the Cross is literally a tracing of the Cross of Christ onto the body. By so doing, Christians invite the mystery of the Cross into their everyday lives. Now and for the first time, young Greek scholar Andreas Andreopoulos explains the tremendous meaning, mystery, and history of this dramatic gesture shared by Christians worldwide. This readable account will fascinate and inspire all who desire to know more about the inherited spiritual practices of everyday life.

  • Come Out My People

    $38.00

Wes Howard-Brook presents the Bible as a struggle between two competing religions: not Judaism and Christianity, but the religion of creation versus the religion of empire. Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, these two religions battled for the hearts and minds of the people in claiming radically divergent views of who YHWH is and what it looks like to be YHWH’s people. Though Jesus was killed by the upholders of empire, his resurrection was the definitive vindication of the religion of creation. A consequence, those who follow his path can accept no violence or domination toward people or creation in his name. While many recent scholars have studied the imperial context of the New Testament, this is the first book to trace this theme throughout the entire Bible.

This original work has been updated for it is most urgent that a thorough revision be undertaken, completely rewritten and with substantial amendments to the selection of entries. To these factors must be added the ongoing revision of the Roman Martyrology in progress at the Congregation of Divine Worship in Rome, which has altered a number of dates for commemoration, and which this new revision follows.

What do you really want to do with your life? Who do you want to be in your life? How does God speak to you about your life? This volume, like the Catholics on Call program at Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, raises these important questions. The highly respected essayists shed light on the variety of vocational paths in the church while providing insights about discernment, ministry, and prayer. They seek to offer young men and women information, guidance, and inspiration as they discern a life of ministry-and help them to discover that discerning a vocation is not a matter of choosing the more appealing of a variety of options; rather, it is an openness to discovering God’s will.

  • Gods Power Within You

    $12.95

This book explores our potential offered by Christ in His Sermon on the Mount commonly known as the Beatitudes. Within the nine Beatitudes, Christ summarizes his teachings about our life, how to be as children of God. In brief statements, He introduces qualities that we need to develop in order to become members of the kingdom of heaven. This desired state of happiness in the kingdom of heaven is not an abstract or indefinite promise. It is a reality that starts in our present life and provides inner joy and peace while we are still in this world.

Most people pursue physical pleasures or various forms of self-gratification. When I obtain this or am free of that then I will be okay. Invariably, any satisfaction that we obtain accumulation of material wealth or physical pleasure is short-lived and usually is projected into the future. This mindset creates the illusion of salvation in the future. True salvation happens today, it is at this moment, and shall continue after life to become complete in the presence of God.

As our world is going through critical times, people began to realize that there is no satisfactory answer in whatever options society offers. And since nothing seems to be working effectively, people find comfort in returning to God who is the source of life and the provider of all good things. Like a glass of cool water in hot summer day, this book promises to quench the soul s thirst for spiritual relief.

The role of lay ecclesial ministers-professionally prepared laity who serve in leadership roles-is becoming critically more important in the life of the Catholic church. In Lay Ecclesial Ministry, theologians and pastoral leaders from diverse disciplines provide a deeper understanding, envision future direction, and offer inspiration for these new ministers and the community of the church.

Building on the themes of the first official document addressing lay ecclesial ministry, Co-workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2005, this book delves deeply into key topics. Authors reflect on dimensions of the Catholic tradition to enrich our understanding of this new reality of lay ministry in the church, to envision future developments, and to offer inspiration. Contributors draw on a variety of theological perspectives, including canon law, church history, ecclesiology, liturgy, and scripture, to ground understanding of lay ecclesial ministry within the Catholic tradition and to chart direction for further response to this newly emergent ministry. The book also offers inspiration and models of service to lay ministers, looking to stories of the saints and communities of vowed religious.

Lay Ecclesial Ministry is an essential resource for the Catholic community in understanding and building upon this new and increasingly important component of church life.

  • Culture Inculturation And Theologians

    $29.95

“The split between the Gospel and culture is without doubt the drama of our time,” wrote Paul VI in 1975. Since that time there has been an increasingly urgent awareness that inculturation is an indispensable task of the church. But inculturation, the dialogue between church and cultures, demands first of all that we who would enter into the dialogue understand what “culture” itself means and what dialogue entails. To that end, cultural anthropologist Father Gerald Arbuckle gives us this important volume.

He traces the history of the development of the concept of “culture,” and the too-often negative, rarely positive effects of encounters between church and culture.
He explores how Jesus Christ approached the cultures of his time, and outlines the current treatment of culture and inculturation in church documents and in Catholic theology.
He shows that modest progress in understanding has recently stalled, and there are even forces working to turn that progress into regress.
He concludes with a description of inculturation as it needs to happen-and a sharp critique of those who resist. With a sense of prophetic hope, Arbuckle seeks to help us bridge the lamentable split between Gospel and culture, the drama that continues to unfold in our time.

Mothers, Lovers, Priests, Prophets, and King provides a doorway to enter into the world of the Old Testament for both the casual and the more experienced reader. The newcomer to scripture will find an easily accessible group of stories about people who look and act just like the characters we know today and whose encounters with God leave us wondering what God has in store for us. The more experienced reader will come to know the God of the Old Testament more closely and see there the One who came to dwell with us as Jesus Christ. Both readers will take away from the book a deeper appreciation of the nature of scripture as a Living Word, a greater understanding of the connection between God in the Old Testament and God in the New, and a better awareness of the multifaceted nature of God’s interaction with us. This book helps readers begin to answer the questions: Who is the God we meet in scripture? Who is God for me now? How is God revealed in the patterns and experiences of my life?

Individuals and groups will find this book helpful in bible studies, small church groups, and as a way of sparking conversation about our images of God and what our relationship with God looks like. Readers will be able to place themselves in these stories and discover what God has to say to them. Those using the book for individual reading will be able to move from the scripture to the meditation to guiding questions and prayer designed to enhance their experience.

  • Introducing The Practice Of Ministry

    $24.95

Ministry is often examined in terms of who the minister is, not what the minister does. But the vocation to ministry must be understood as a call to identity as well as to practice, one that is rooted in Jesus’ life and ministry as well as the Spirit’s charisms. In Introducing the Practice of Ministry Kathleen A. Cahalan defines ministerial leadership as carried out through the practices of teaching, preaching, pastoral care, worship, social ministry, and administration for the sake of nurturing the life of discipleship in the community of believers. In her examination of charisms for each of the practices of ministry, Cahalan presents readers with a Trinitarian foundation, noting that “the practices of discipleship and ministry have their origin in the very practices of God.”

  • What Then Is Liturgy

    $29.95

Father Anscar Chupungco fondly recalls his first class as a student at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in 1965. Professor Salvatore Marsili-famed theologian, liturgist, and cofounder of the institute-entered the lecture hall, and after a prolonged and awkward silence finally asked, “And so, what is liturgy?”

This seemingly simple question underlies Chupungco’s untiring love for liturgy and his lifetime of searching for answers. His is a passion deeply rooted in tradition, which is evident in this volume. Relying on Scripture, patristic writers, and conciliar and postconciliar documents-and with great skill, prudence, and the fundamental virtue of obedience-he carefully examines current liturgical trends that are the subject of fierce debate. At a time when we focus so intently on the debate itself, Chupungco cautions us to remember: “At the end of the day what matters are not personal opinions but what truly contributes to making the prayer of the Church an encounter with the person of Christ.” It is this most sacred encounter that is at the heart of What, Then, Is Liturgy? And it is this encounter that will lead us day by day to the ultimate heavenly liturgy, our eternal and perfect offering of praise to God.

When Helen Kowalska (1905-1938) entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy as Sister Faustina, she also entered a spiritual dark night. That night ended when, transformed by this experience, she recognized Gods love for her in the sufferings of Jesus; instructed by him in a vision, she produced the Image of the Divine Mercy. These selections, taken from the diary that her spiritual director encouraged her to keep, relate her mystical experiences and convey the spirituality she drew from love for the Eucharist and reinforced through trust in the mercy of God.

Praying with Saint Faustina will lead to the joy and comfort found only by trusting in God, seeking his mercy, and reflecting that mercy in life.

Reading them makes possible a deeper and more cogent reception of the key ideas of the council documents. These texts are at once both erudite and exciting, both essential and pastorally incisive. The celebration of the Latin or Tridentine mass, otherwise known as the Extraordinary Form, is an increasingly common practice in Roman Catholic churches throughout the world. Once the only rite in use which Catholics around the world knew from childhood, its usage ended with the Second Vatican Council’s ruling that liturgy should be celebrated in peoples’ own languages. The Latin mass thus became the preserve of various traditionalist societies. Two years ago the Pope declared that the celebration of the Latin mass was to be restored and regularly offered alongside the modern mass. aaToday, priests trained in the modern rite are learning how to celebrate the Latin mass and there is a demand for liturgical resources to accompany it, especially as it follows a different calendar and lectionary. It has an introduction by Mgr Anthony Conlon, Chaplain of the Latin Mass Society, one of a number of societies dedicated to promoting the use of the Extraordinary Rite.

  • 15 Days Of Prayer With Brother Roger Of Taiza

    $12.95

Brother Roger (1915-2005) founded the ecumenical Taize Community, which continues to welcome tens of thousands of young adult pilgrims each year. The Community is familiar to the faithful of many denominations, who use Taizes meditative songs in their worship.

So this book presents not a program of prayer but an itinerary through the insights at the heart of Brother Rogers life of prayer and of action, telling the story of the Taize Community along the way. Additional Info
The 12th-century Benedictine Abbess Hildegard of Bingen was blessed with an astonishing array of talents. She was, among other things, a mystic, naturalist, visionary, and composer. Hildegard was also granted, by means of heavenly visions, in-depth knowledge about human nutrition. She believed “foods of joy” revitalized us and helped preserve good health in every sphere-physical, spiritual, and psychological.

Now, famed French chef Jany Fournier-Rosset has mined from Hildegard’s writings a collection of tasty recipes-you’ll find everything from simple jams to chestnut souffle, from spiced wine to Tunisian ratatouille. The book contains a measurement conversion table, cooking terms, special bread-making instructions, lists of ingredients with definitions, sources for rare ingredients used in the recipes, and an index.

Readers will also find a brief biography of Hildegard and table graces from Saint Benedict and others.

With a focus on good health and vegetables and herbs from the garden, From Saint Hildegard’s Kitchen makes a wonderful gift for the cooks in your life-including you!

  • Priscilla And Aquila

    $19.95

Human beings are embedded in a set of social relations. A social network is one way of conceiving that set of relations in terms of a number of persons connected to one another by varying degrees of relatedness. In the early Jesus group documents featuring Paul and coworkers, it takes little effort to envision the apostle’s collection of friends and friends of friends that is the Pauline network. The persons who constituted that network are the focus of this set of books. For Christians of the Western tradition, these persons are significant ancestors in faith. While each of them is worth knowing by themselves, it is largely because of their standing within that web of social relations woven about and around Paul that they are of lasting interest. Through this series we hope to come to know those persons in ways befitting their first-century Mediterranean culture.

In her exploration of the texts about Priscilla and Aquila, Marie Nol Keller asks, “What does God want us to learn from their story?” The biblical writings show that they worked, lived, and traveled with Paul. As his trusted coworkers, Priscilla and Aquila provided a presence that strengthened the early Jesus groups. Their mutuality in ministry and their leadership as laypeople can inspire members of church communities today to work together as teachers and preachers of the gospel.

  • Deeper Than Words

    $14.00

Spiritual teacher and bridge-builder Brother David Steindl-Rast translates the Apostles’ Creed for today, uncovering the deeper universal truths that can be an inspiration to all people.

In Deeper than Words: Living the Apostles’ Creed, Brother David reexamines the words with which the early followers of Jesus summarized their faith. Reading line-by-line with an open perspective, he reveals the often overlooked message of trust, compassion, peace, love, and awareness contained in this widely known but rarely examined statement.
Deeper than Words moves beyond ritual and exclusivity and instead finds a deeper faith based in real human experience and the sense of limitless belonging that is shared by all people who seek to understand themselves and the world. The words of the Apostles’ Creed are Christian, but its heart is a universal and timeless guide to fullness of life. From this transformation perspective, developed over a lifetime of contemplation, Brother David presents a powerful call to renewal through reconnection with the spiritual and a reawakening to shared sacred truths.
