Telling The Story Of Jesus

In Telling the Story of Jesus, he encourages readers to be in communion with the Word and to seek Christ among us so that if we listen to him more attentively, we will also have stories of Jesus to tell. Cardinal Tagle combines biblical narration and personal experience with sound theological reflection so that the story of Jesus becomes a story of love that leads to hope for the poor, for the church, and for the life of the entire world.

Rethinking Christian Forgiveness
$34.95Add to cartIs there such a thing as “Christian Forgiveness”? Christians speak as though there is. But what would it be? How would it differ from forgiveness as a basic human enactment? And if there is a distinctive Christian forgiveness, what might it have to say to our world today? To answer these questions, the present work traverses three distinctive intellectual landscapes-continental philosophy, Anglo-American moral philosophy, and psychology-to establish a phenomenology of forgiving before turning to contemporary Christian literature. The multilayered dialogue that ensues challenges the assumptions of contemporary approaches-secular and Christian-and invites the reader to rethink the meaning of Christian forgiveness.

Flannery OConnor : Fiction Fired By Faith
$21.95Add to cartFlannery O’Connor: Fiction Fired by Faith tells the remarkable story of the gifted young woman who set out from her native Georgia to develop her talents as a writer and eventually succeeded in becoming one of the most accomplished fiction writers of the twentieth century. Struck with a fatal disease just as her career was blooming, O’Connor was forced to return to her rural home and to live an isolated life, far from the literary world she longed to be a part of.
In this insightful new biography, Angela Alaimo O’Donnell depicts O’Connor’s passionate devotion to her vocation, despite her crippling illness, the rich interior life she lived through her reading and correspondence, and the development of her deep and abiding faith in the face of her own impending mortality. She also explores some of O’Connor’s most beloved stories, detailing the ways in which her fiction served as a means for her to express her own doubts and limitations, along with the challenges and consolations of living a faithful life. O’Donnell’s biography recounts the poignant story of America’s preeminent Catholic writer and offers the reader a guide to her novels and stories so deeply informed by her Catholic faith.
People of God is a series of inspiring biographies for the general reader. Each volume offers a compelling and honest narrative of the life of an important twentieth or twenty-first century Catholic. Some living and some now deceased, each of these women and men has known challenges and weaknesses familiar to most of us but responded to them in ways that call us to our own forms of heroism. New Politics : Catholic Social Teaching For The Twenty First Century
$25.00Add to cartFor more than a century the Catholic Church has closely scrutinized the economic certainties of capitalism and communism. As a result, it has slowly developed an entirely new position from which today to survey the capitalist leviathan. What this book sets out to do is to chronicle that development and highlight the insights it has formed which have a particular resonance for the world as it enters the . twenty-first century. Michael Walsh describes developments from Rerum Novarum to Vatican II, and Brian Davies the work of John XXIII and Vatican II itself. Julian Filochowski looks at the early social doctrine of Paul VI, and the encyclicals of John Paul II are discussed by Ian Linden, Clifford Langley and Julie Clague. Finally, Paul Vallely looks into the new millennium beyond John Paul II. The book is an important contribution to political and social thought at the beginning of the new millennium. Authoritative, positive and open, its appeal is far from restricted to Catholics or even Christians. Its distinguished contributors offer suggestions for a thought which might combine economic efficiency with social concerns to create a more compassionate community. The tools are there for those with the foresight and courage to take them up. Paul Vallely writes on current social, ethical and political issues for The Independent. He is also the Chair of the Catholic Institute for International Relations and of Traidcraft Exchange.

Reclaiming Humility : Four Studies In The Monastic Tradition
$29.95Add to cartDoes humility have a place in contemporary life? Were Enlightenment thinkers wrong to reject humility as a “monkish virtue” (Hume) arising from a “slave morality” (Nietzsche)? Australian theologian Jane Foulcher recovers the counter-cultural reading of humility that marked early Christianity and examines its trajectory at key junctures in the development of Western monasticism. Humility emerges not as a moral virtue achieved by human effort but as a way opened by grace-as a divine “climate” (Christian de Cherge) that we are invited to inhabit. From fourth-century Egypt to twentieth-century Algeria, via Saint Benedict and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, Dr. Foulcher’s compelling analysis of theology and practice challenges the church to reclaim Christian humility as essential to its life and witness today.

Listening Community : A Commentary On The Prologue And Chapter 1-3 Of Bened
$24.95Add to cartThis new book by Sister Aquinata Bockmann discusses the Prologue and chapters 1, 2, and 3 of the Rule of St. Benedict. In a lectio regulae she plumbs the depths of Benedict’s vision. Listen, the first word of the Prologue, is a keyword that describes the main stance of the individual monastic, the superior, and the entire community. Listening to the Scriptures and in them to Christ guides individuals and the community on how to “run on the way of God’s commandments” toward the goal of communal life in and with Christ. The first three chapters of the Rule concretize the principles of this communal spirituality of listening: the importance of a rule and a pastor for maintaining the community’s attentiveness to life; the superior’s responsibility to listen to individuals within the community; and the mutual listening between leader and community members, regardless of their age.
As in her earlier books Sister Aquinata proves to be a true guide into the spirit of Benedict’s Rule, which provides sound principles for listening in common in a community of life. -
Knowing The Natural Law
$34.95Add to cartRecent discussions of Thomas Aquinas’s treatment of natural law have focused upon the “self-evident” character of the first principles, but few attempts have been made to determine in what manner they are selfevident. On some accounts, a self-evident precept must have, at most, a tenuous connection with speculative reason, especially our knowledge of God, and it must be untainted by the stain of “deriving” an ought from an is. Yet Aquinas himself had a robust account of the good, rooted in human nature. He saw no fundamental difference between is-statements and ought-statements, both of which he considered to be descriptive. Knowing the Natural Law traces the thought of Aquinas from an understanding of human nature to a knowledge of the human good, from there to an account of ought-statements, and finally to choice, which issues in human actions. The much discussed article on the precepts of the natural law (I-II, 94, 2) provides the framework for a natural law rooted in human nature and in speculative knowledge. Practical knowledge is itself threefold: potentially practical knowledge, virtually practical knowledge, and fully practical knowledge. This distinction within practical knowledge, typically overlooked or underutilized, reveals the steps by which the mind moves from speculative knowledge all the way to fully practical knowledge. The most significant sections of Knowing the Natural Law examine the nature of ought-statements, the imperative force of moral precepts, the special character of per se nota propositions as found within the natural law, and the final movement from knowledge to action.

On The Side Of The Poor
$28.00Add to cartFor many years the theology of liberation, which emerged from Latin America in the 1970s, was viewed with suspicion and even hostility in Rome. In this historic exchange, Father Gustavo Gutierrez, one of the original architects of liberation theology, and Cardinal Gerhard Muller, current Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, offer a new and positive chapter. Cardinal Muller, who as a student of Gutierrez spent many summers working in Peru, writes with deep feeling and conviction about the contributions of liberation theology to church teaching-particularly in its articulation of the preferential option for the poor.

There Is No Rose
$27.00Add to cartMary continues to be a source of theological interest and concern for Catholics and Protestants alike. For Catholics, Mariology was codified in a set of dogmas over the centuries; yet many Catholics remain unaware of the biblical, historical, and theological matrix that gave rise to the magisterial teaching. Protestants, with some exceptions, remain skeptical of Marianism in Catholic theology, viewing such as intrusions upon biblical doctrine and faith or unnecessary accretions threatening of sound Christian theology. Aidan Nichols, OP, attempts to address this “puzzlement” of Mary. Working through the biblical, patristic, and medieval sources, Nichols introduces readers to the robust scriptural and theological bases for the Church’s celebration of Mary in its doctrine and liturgy, alongside the work of the Councils and the magisterium, to argue for the crucial relevance of Mary in the theological articulation of the gospel, the celebration and practice of the liturgy, and the sacramental life of the Church. The present study aims to contribute to the revival of a more full-blooded Marian teaching and attempts to take the path set by ressourcement theology in recovering the robust voice of witness to Mary.

Jesus Of Nazareth
$39.95Add to cartWho was Jesus? A prophet? There have been many of those. A miracle-worker? A radical revolutionary? A wise teacher? There have been many of these, too. In his latest book, renowned Scripture scholar Gerhard Lohfink asks, What is unique about Jesus of Nazareth, and what did he really want?
Lohfink engages the perceptions of the first witnesses of his life and ministry and those who handed on their testimony. His approach is altogether historical and critical, but he agrees with Karl Barth’s statement that “historical criticism has to be more critical.”
Lohfink takes seriously the fact that Jesus was a Jew and lived entirely in and out of Israel’s faith experiences but at the same time brought those experiences to their goal and fulfillment. The result is a convincing and profound picture of Jesus.

Prodigal Father : Parable Of Liberation And Love
$9.95Add to cartLuke’s gospel contains a number of passages about compassion. One of the most beloved of these is commonly known as the parable of the Prodigal Son. In The Prodigal Father, Angelo Scarano focuses on the distinctive role of the father in the parable, the example he provides of being transformed by a compassionate heart, and the joy in celebrating the return of what was loved and thought to be lost.
Scarano suggests that this remarkable parable has two climaxes-the banquet for the younger son, and the conversation between the father and the elder son-and that it is in this second climax where the real intention of the evangelist is revealed. Scarano urges readers to accept God’s “compassionate heart,” to allow God’s Spirit to transform us and enable us to live like the prodigal father, opening our hearts to the weak and the strong, the broken and the bitter.
Scarano’s insightful work will be welcomed by preachers, teachers, and anyone engaged in prayer with or reflection upon the gospels.

Unlike any other Advent devotional you’ve ever read, this book unites our preparations and celebrations with a faith as old as song.

These are but a few of the most recognizable names in the broader context of the so-called ecclesial movements. Sing Of Mary
$29.95Add to cartThis study analyzes Marian congregational song in the Roman Catholic Church in the United States from 1854 to 2010, focusing not only on the texts and music, but also on the contexts out of which these songs came. Marian devotion before 1854 is explored as well as pertinent developments in the Roman Catholic Church-particularly Vatican II-and other cultural developments. Through the quantitative and qualitative analysis of these songs, this work develops a broader understanding of how Marian congregational song developed, persisted, and changed as a mediator of Marian devotion.
The survey of 120 hymnals offers a fascinating perspective on how Marian congregational song changed before and after Vatican II. These songs were so meaningful to generations of Roman Catholics and then they seem to disappear after Vatican II. This work seeks to answer the question of why?
Appealing to both lay people and academics, readers are given a clear and full understanding of Marian congregational song. Also included is a chapter that explores how Marian congregational song can be meaningful to a wide range of Christians through the Magnificat.

Inspiration And Truth Of Sacred Scripture
$24.95Add to cartIn his 2009 post-synodal apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini, Pope Benedict XVI pointed out that “theological reflection has always considered inspiration and truth as two key concepts for an ecclesial hermeneutic of the sacred Scriptures” and that there is today the need “for a fuller and more adequate study of these realities, in order to better respond to the need of interpreting the sacred texts in accordance with their nature.”
The Inspiration and Truth of Sacred Scripture: The Word That Comes from God and Speaks of God for the Salvation of the World is the contribution of the Pontifical Biblical Commission toward a more adequate understanding of the concepts of inspiration and truth that respects both the nature of the Bible and its significance for the life of the Church.
