No Other Name
$32.00Add to cartAn honest discussion regarding how devout Christians should react to the academic evidence and genuine personal experience that other religious ways result in engaged, loving and moral lives. Does being saved, by the Christian definition, require a faith in Jesus Christ – meaning the historical person – or rather is it only important that human beings life their lives in accordance to His teachings. This books argues that one can be committed to a savior of some other name, and simultaneously be aligned with Christian theologically and commitment.

Passion Of Jesus In The Gospel Of Luke
$24.95Add to cartThe recent resurgence of scholarship on Luke’s Gospel is due, in part, to this Gospel’s special appeal for an age in which questions of economic justice, peace, and the prophetic role of the Churches questions all important in Luke are so urgent.
Father Senior’s exegesis yields a strong sense of what Luke intended to communicate to his readers and, to some degree, what may have been the circumstances that shaped his message. He reveals the Luke who presents Jesus as a champion of the poor and marginalized, whose message of justice is proclaimed with a sharp prophetic edge.

And You Visited Me (Revised)
$24.95Add to cart“Extreme unction” and “last rites” are no longer a part of the Church’s ministry to the sick and dying, according to Father Charles Gusmer. Today, communal celebration frames sacramental experience. In the rites for the sick and dying, the experience is the paschal mystery – working in the life of the seriously ill Christian in the community. Priests, deacons, and students of liturgy will find this work a sourcebook for understanding the development of the rites and a guide in the ritual praxis. Suggestions for ministerial implementation are made in the context of information now available from liturgical scholarship and modern scientific research on sickness and death.

On Liturgical Theology
$29.95Add to cartNearly everything that theologians write on liturgy, Father Kavanagh notes, is often called liturgical theology, although on closer examination such works appear to be either dogmatic theologies about the liturgy or systematic theologies making use of liturgical data. None truly reflects how liturgy shapes theology or is theology or even relates to theology.
This work is Father Kavanagh’s effort to substantiate the existence of a truly liturgical theology. It will raise almost as many questions as it answers; but it will also further insight into theology and liturgy as it assays their relationship.

West African Christianity
$34.00Add to cartIn this fascinating re-evaluation of Christian history West African Christianity concentrates on the role of Africans as the principal agents of, and the significance of African materials in, the spread of Christianity from its earliest centuries. When examining Christianity in Africa other studies focus mainly on the organization of the missionary effort in Europe and America, seeing the rise of African Christianity as a direct consequence of external developments. Still others view Christianity as chiefly the unwitting begetter of nationalist reaction.
In contrast to both of these approaches Dr. Sanneh analyzed the Christian religious theme by linking it to local religious responses and attitudes. He pays particular attention to the adaptation of religion in African societies and to parallels and exigencies in local traditions, with the Western missionary theme considered in the light of indigenous initiatives. He reviews developments in New Testament times and early Christianity in Egypt and North Africa, as well as paying special attention to the phenomenon of African Christian Independency.
West African Christianity concludes with an examination of both Christianity and Islam in their African manifestation, demonstrating how “the African factor” emerges as a major category of transformation: preceding in importance “this missionary factor.”

At Noon On Friday
$8.95Add to cartAt Noon On Friday is a volume of reflections on the seven last words of Jesus as he hung on the cross. In his usual masterly fashion, Dr. Richard C. Hoefler holds up before his listeners the cross of Christ and calls for a devotional response not merely an intellectual one. The goal of these sermons is to prompt something important, different and decisive to happen to both speaker and listener. They were written in such a way as to create an experience of participating in the three hours our Lord suffered. In the author’s words: “The seven words of Christ are like seven panels of one single stained glass window, reflecting forth the light of the total act of our Lord’s crucifixion.”

Wounded Healer : Ministry In Contemporary Society
$17.00Add to cartThe Wounded Healer is a hope-filled and profoundly simple book that speaks directly to those men and women who want to be of service in their church or community, but have found the traditional ways often threatening and ineffective. In this book, Henri Nouwen combines creative case studies of ministry with stories from diverse cultures and religious traditions in preparing a new model for ministry. Weaving keen cultural analysis with his psychological and religious insights, Nouwen has come up with a balanced and creative theology of service that begins with the realization of fundamental woundedness in human nature. Emphasizing that which is in humanity common to both minister and believer, this woundedness can serve as a source of strength and healing when counseling others. Nouwen proceeds to develop his approach to ministry with an analysis of sufferings — a suffering world, a suffering generation, a suffering person, and a suffering minister. It is his contention that ministers are called to recognize the sufferings of their time in their own hearts and make that recognition the starting point of their service. For Nouwen, ministers must be willing to go beyond their professional role and leave themselves open as fellow human beings with the same wounds and suffering — in the image of Christ. In other words, we heal from our own wounds. Filled with examples from everyday experience, The Wounded Healer is a thoughtful and insightful guide that will be welcomed by anyone engaged in the service of others.

Eucharist : Essence Form Celebration (Revised)
$36.95Add to cartThis well-known and respected work on the eucharistic celebration has been updated and revised. The editor Monsignor Maas-Ewerd has incorporated the insights of recent research, updated the bibliography, and re-formulated many passages in light of some important changes in thought and language since the first edition.
The Eucharist: Essence, Form, Celebration helps readers gain an understanding of correct form for celebration of the eucharistic liturgy in light of the renewals of Vatican Council II. It is therefore an “explanation of the Mass,” as Pius Parsch, to whom the first edition was dedicated, understood it. It is an explanation both of the biblical foundations and of the historical development of the liturgy within its two-thousand-year tradition. Thus, Maas-Ewerd maintains that we must inquire into both aspects-Jesus’ foundational intention and the Church’s long tradition of celebrating the Lord’s legacy-to obtain a clear picture of the enduringly valid form of the Mass at all times, including its present realization.
In the foreword to the first edition, Johannes Emminghaus wrote that, despite the many content and language changes since the first edition, Parsch’s fundamental principle was correct, and it remains so today: the essence or nature of the liturgy can only be explained on the basis of Christ’s institution (as witnessed in Scripture) and the traditional teaching of the Church. Its form, in turn, with its many changes and its high and low points, is explicable also through Scripture and history; but the manner of its celebration can only be explained through the form as we know it and especially through the concrete faith of people.
The intent of The Eucharist: Essence, Form, Celebration is practical: it is meant as an aid to an appropriate and responsible celebration of the congregational Eucharist. Readers-those in ministry, teachers, catechists, and members of parish liturgical committees and study groups, as well as those interested in Church history-are invited to an active participation, one that bears fruit because it stems from faith.
Maas-Ewerd maintains that our task now is to live with the renewed liturgy, to integrate it more fully into our lives, and at the same time understand and celebrate it as a sign of salvation and as the Church’s self-expression. The Eucharist: Essence, Form, Celebration encourages this process.
