Most Famous Man In America
$25.00Add to cartNo one predicted success for Henry Ward Beecher at his birth in 1813. The blithe, boisterous son of the last great Puritan minister, he seemed destined to be overshadowed by his brilliant siblings–especially his sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe, who penned the century’s bestselling book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.” But when pushed into the ministry, the charismatic Beecher found international fame by shedding his father’s Old Testament-style fire-and-brimstone theology and instead preaching a New Testament-based gospel of unconditional love and healing, becoming one of the founding fathers of modern American Christianity. By the 1850s, his spectacular sermons at Plymouth Church in Brooklyn Heights had made him New York’s number one tourist attraction, so wildly popular that the ferries from Manhattan to Brooklyn were dubbed “Beecher Boats.”
Beecher inserted himself into nearly every important drama of the era–among them the antislavery and women’s suffrage movements, the rise of the entertainment industry and tabloid press, and controversies ranging from Darwinian evolution to presidential politics. He was notorious for his irreverent humor and melodramatic gestures, such as auctioning slaves to freedom in his pulpit and shipping rifles–nicknamed “Beecher’s Bibles”–to the antislavery resistance fighters in Kansas. Thinkers such as Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, and Twain befriended–and sometimes parodied–him.
And then it all fell apart. In 1872 Beecher was accused by feminist firebrand Victoria Woodhull of adultery with one of his most pious parishioners. Suddenly the “Gospel of Love” seemed to rationalize a life of lust. The cuckolded husband brought charges of “criminal conversation” in a salacious trial that became the most widely covered event of the century, garnering more newspaper headlines than the entire Civil War. Beecher survived, but his reputation and his causes–from women’s rights to progressive evangelicalism–suffered devastating setbacks that echo to this day.
Featuring the page-turning suspense of a novel and dramatic new historical evidence, Debby Applegate has written the definitive biography of this captivating, mercurial, and sometimes infuriating figure. In our own time, when religion and politics are again colliding and adultery in high places still commands headlines, Beecher’s story sheds new light on the culture and conflicts of contemporary America.

Dwelling In The Household Of God
$29.95Add to cartIn her remarkable first book, God Dwells With Us: Temple Symbolism in the Fourth Gospel, Mary L. Coloe, P.B.V.M., explored the profound insight of John’s Gospel expressed in Jesus’ invitation to his disciples: “Make your home in me, as I make mine in you” (John 15:4). For the gospel’s author and audience, the dwelling of God among humans was, above all, the Jerusalem Temple. The gospel traces how-after the trauma of the destruction of the Temple-the Johannine community came to expand and deepen its knowledge of God’s dwelling among humans, finding it now in the person of Jesus and in the community of believers.
Dwelling in the Household of God moves us from seeing God’s dwelling place as the Temple to seeing God’s dwelling place within the community of believers. The starting point now is an image in John 14:2: “my Father’s house,” which is given its Old Testament meaning of “my father’s household.” Our awareness thus moves, like that of the first Christians, from understanding “My father’s house” as the Temple (John 2:16) to “My Father’s Household” as a community of believers drawn into Jesus’ own divine filiation. Coloe invites us to re-read the gospel from the post-Easter perspective of those who have become brothers and sisters of Jesus and living Temples of God’s presence. What emerges is nothing less than a profound mysticism of the mutual indwelling of God and believers.

Power Of Solitude
$16.95Add to cartIn the hustle and bustle of modern life the word “solitude” may provoke a sigh of relief or the anxiety of loneliness. Dr. Kidder has found that a significant dimension of our spiritual lives is most deeply encountered in solitude. Married, single, or recently divorced — all of us can find opportunities for solitude that offer a unique opportunity for personal growth and encounters with God. Themes include: romantic allure as a substitute for spirituality; the loner syndrome; cultural conditioning; coupling, co-habitation, and community; fear of loneliness; overachieving; the search for intimacy; the search for sexual fulfillment; Biblical roots; Jesus, the solitary person; Mary and the Annunciation; Mary Magdalene in the Gospels, the Gospel of Thomas, and the DaVinci Code; Augustine, Luther, and Calvin; evangelicalism; prayer, song, drama; spiritual direction; meditation; tending to the body; vows and covenants of temporary/long-term abstinence; and coping with opposition.

1-2 Thessalonians
$29.95Add to cartThe letters First and Second Thessalonians are traditionally associated with the Pauline foundation of the Macedonian Church at Thessalonica. The first is seen as representing Paul’s earliest epistolary efforts and as providing two successive moments in his long relationship as advisor to that community. Soon after leaving the area for the southern province of Achaia, Paul addresses the concerns of the new Gentile converts and at a later period responds more directly to queries received from the thriving and successful community. The second document, written in Paul’s name and at a later date, attempts to calm the apocalyptic fervor of the community by reiterating its traditional eschatological and Christological teaching.
After treating these introductory matters, this study provides a new translation of each section of the canonical text, explains in notes the pertinent textual and linguistic features of the text, and then offers in a series of interpretive messages a literary, rhetorical, and thematic analysis of the biblical documents. The constant concern of this commentary is to provide assistance to modern readers in discerning the relationship between the authors and their intended readers. Short bibliographies suggest other important modern studies. Includes an updated bibliography as an appendix.

Galatians
$39.95Add to cartPaul’s Letter to the Galatians has played a major role in the history of theology, especially in the Church’s teaching on grace, faith, and justification. This commentary argues that Paul’s doctrine of justification by faith is essentially social in nature and has important ecumenical implications for the Church today. In its original setting, Galatians established a foundation for the unity of Jewish and Gentile Christians: all are justified by the faith of Jesus Christ.
In addition to illuminating the historical situation that led Paul to write his Letter to the Galatians, this commentary pays careful attention to the rhetorical structure of this letter and its theological message. The author provides a fresh translation of Galatians, critical notes on each verse of the text, and a careful commentary of the letter in light of Paul’s theology.
Theories abound on the question of Galatians, why it was written, what it says, and what the implications of that message are. Yet few scholars have devoted themselves at length to this letter. What sets this work apart is the extent and detail of its scholarship. Includes an updated bibliography as an appendix.

It’s not whether you have a creed or not, just which.
“No creed but Christ.” This claim tries to remove the mess of doctrinal controversy. After all, doesn’t everyone know that “doctrine divides?” But would avoiding creeds and confessions really clear away confusion? What do you believe about Jesus? Was he really God? The answers to these important questions make a creed, even if it’s only poorly worded or false. Creeds are unavoidable.
As the church’s first “official” ecumenical creed, the Nicene Creed has protected and shaped the life of God’s people for centuries. L. Charles Jackson’s popular study walks readers through every line of the Nicene creed, highlighting its history and contemporary application, and revealing its grounding in Scripture. It shows us a Nicene Creed that is pastoral, practical, and personal. -
4 Times Peter
$15.95Add to cartBecause he plays such a prominent role in the New Testament and the tradition of the church, the apostle Peter has been the focus of much scholarship over the centuries. One wonders whether there can be anything more to say about Peter. Indeed, there is. In Four Times Peter Richard Cassidy takes a narrative critical look at Peter in the story of each gospel individually (rather than studying Peter via a side-by-side analysis of the gospels). Cassidy looks first to the character of Jesus in each of the gospels and then to the group of apostles as a whole before turning to Peter.
In the end, Four Times Peter allows an intriguing portrait of this apostle to emerge. Readers discover a portrait of Peter that would have been familiar to the earliest Christian communities. And it is this ancient portrait that gives modern readers a refreshing new sense of Peter.

Road To Vatican 2
$17.95Add to cartThe Second Vatican Council is considered by most theologians to have been a decisive moment in the history of the Catholic Church. It produced a charter for the Church of the twentieth century and beyond and spawned thousands of books, articles, conferences, and doctoral theses over the last forty years. Part of the Council’s fascination lies in the many “stories” that surround it. In THE ROAD TO VATICAN II, author Maureen Sullivan tells the story behind the story by revealing how the Church moved from the rigid, hierarchical model espoused by Pius IX at Vatican I (1869-70) to the collegial, “communio” model that emerged under John XXIII at Vatican II (1962-65). She recounts the events and trends leading up to the Council and demonstrates how it became possible, in the four brief sessions that took place from 1962-65, for over 2,500 bishops-who often disagreed on the most critical issues-to produce sixteen documents that touched the very essence of the Catholic faith. THE ROAD TO VATICAN II is written-not for other theologians-but for men and women who are eager to have a more in-depth understanding of a watershed event that shaped their faith. The author focuses on the contributions of important theologians whose efforts over the years laid the groundwork for the Council and she documents their influence on many of the key documents that emerged. Sullivan argues that these theologians were indeed prophets among us, offering a renewed vision of the faith, a methodology to facilitate the theological endeavor, and a language of life rediscovered in the New Testament that could speak to contemporary men and women. These prophets often suffered because of their convictions, but Sullivan maintains that they were instruments of the Holy Spirit in our midst-and their story needed to be told.

Eucharistic Vision And The Spirituality Of Saint Francis Of Assisi
$12.95Add to cartDevotion to the Sacrament of Christ’s Body and Blood lies at the heart of the spirituality of St. Francis, and his vision was to inspire the Church’s development over the succeeding centuries. Writing in this Franciscan tradition, Brother Mark offers his own insights on the Eucharist and St. Francis, insights that were first shared at an annual retreat of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal.
This book provides a unique series of meditations for Eucharistic devotion. Although each is a separate reflection on the Eucharist in the life of the Church, there is an implied centrality of the sacramentin the life of any Catholic wishing to deepen the life of prayer. In this, St.
Francis can be our model and our guide. Just as in the thirteenth century his example helped to renew the life of the Church, which was confronted by many crises, so in our own day the Church, hedged about with conflict and compromise, and with declining vocations, is seeing a revival of devotion to the Blessed Sacrament as perhaps the first sign of renewal. -
Byzantine Rome And The Greek Popes
$57.99Add to cartByzantine Rome and the Greek Popes examines the scope and extent to which the East influenced Rome and the Papacy following the Justinian Reconquest of Italy in the middle of the sixth century through the pontificate of Zacharias and the collapse of the exarchate of Ravenna in 752.
A combination of factors resulted in the arrival of significant numbers of easterners in Rome, and those immigrants had brought with them a number of eastern customs and practices previously unknown in the city. Greek influence became apparent in art, religious ceremonial and liturgics, sacred music, the rhetoric of doctrinal debate, the growth of eastern monastic communities, and charitable institutions, and the proliferation of the cults of eastern saints and ecclesiastical feast days and, in particular, devotion to the Theotokos or Mother of God. From the late seventh to the middle of the eighth century, eleven of the thirteen Roman pontiffs were the sons of families of eastern provenance.
While conceding that over the course of the seventh century Rome indeed experienced the impact of an important Greek element, some scholars of the period have insisted that the degree to which Rome and the Papacy were “orientalized” has been exaggerated, while others argue that the extent of their “byzantinization” has not been fully appreciated. The question has also been raised as to whether Rome’s oriental popes were responsible for sowing the seeds of separatism from Byzantium and laying the foundation for a future papal state, or whether they were loyal imperial subjects ever steadfast politically, although not always so in matters of the faith, to the reigning sovereign in Constantinople. Finally, there is the important issue of whether one could still speak of a single and undivided imperium Roman christianum in the seventh and early eighth centuries or whether the concept of imperial unity in the epoch following Gregory the Great was a quaint and fanciful fiction as East and West, ignoring and misunderstanding one another, began to go their separate ways. Byzantine Rome and the Greek Popes provides a guide through this complicated and often contradictory history.

Everything Is Grace
$19.95Add to cartTherese of Lisieux has been called the greatest saint of modern times, but some view her spirituality as sentimental and syrupy. Joseph F. Schmidt does a masterful job of weaving together biographical details with Therese’s profound insights on God’s love and mercy. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants an introduction to Therese’s spirituality as well as for those who desire a deeper appreciation of her “little way”-a way that continues to speak to Catholics today.

Christianity And Science
$30.00Add to cart“There is nothing in Christian faith that should make one afraid of science’s widening and deepening knowledge. No matter how enormous the picture of the natural world turns out to be, it can never surpass the infinity we have always attributed to God.”
In his many previous books John Haught established a reputation as the leading Catholic theological voice in the study of science and religion. In this work he offers his most systematic theological reflections on the relation between Christian revelation and the unfolding story of the universe. In the face of recent discoveries some maintain their faith by clinging to a pre-scientific worldview; others conclude that perhaps “the universe has outgrown the biblical God who is said to be its creator.” For Haught, however, exploration of the “three infinities”-the immense, the infinitesimal, and the complex-serves as invitation to an unprecedented appreciation for the grandeur of God, creation, Christ, and redemption.

Women In Mission
$30.00Add to cartThe first full-length study of women’s changing roles in the mission of Christianity.
In surveying those major works that treat the full sweep of the church’s missional self-understanding, Susan E. Smith notes that, while they help us better understand the story of Christian mission, “they are less helpful in understanding women’s part in that narrative.” In matters of mission history, as in so many other areas, scholars have been much better at telling “his” story than “hers.”
Smith tries to redress the balance with a comprehensive history of mission that highlights the critical contributions of women, as well as the theological developments that influenced their role. Beginning with an examination of the New Testament record, Smith goes on to review the long period between the apostolic church and the Second Vatican Council. Following a survey of critical developments since 1965 in both Catholic and other churches, she concludes with a magisterial chapter entitled “A Feminist Missiology for Contemporary Missionary Women.”
Women in Mission is a landmark in women’s history and essential reading for anyone engaged in historical, theological, mission, and women’s studies.

Interrupting White Privilege
$28.00Add to cartWhite Catholic theologians have remained relatively silent on the topic of racism since publication in 1979 of the U.S. bishops’ statement against racism, Brothers and Sisters to Us. In this hard-hitting study, prominent Roman Catholic theologians address the issue of white privilege. When John Paul II lapsed into illness for the last time, people flocked from all over the world to pray outside his apartment. He had become a father figure to millions in a world bereft of strong paternal examples, and those millions now felt orphaned. After more than twenty-six years of John Paul II’s guidance, the Catholic Church is entering a new age, with its bedrock traditions intact but with pressing questions to address in a rapidly changing world. Beginning with the story of John Paul’s final months, God’s Choice offers a remarkable inside account of the conclave that produced Benedict XVI as the next pope, drawing on George Weigel’s unrivaled access to this complex event.
Weigel also incisively surveys the current state of the Church around the world: its thriving populations in Africa, Latin America, and parts of the post-communist world; its collapse in western Europe; its continued struggles in Asia; and the vibrancy of many aspects of Catholic life in the United States, even as the Church in America struggles to overcome its recent experience of scandal.
Reflecting on John Paul II’s greatness, drawing on firsthand interviews to paint an intimate portrait of the new Pope, and boldly assessing the Church’s current condition, God’s Choice is an invaluable book for anyone seeking to understand the Catholic future and the larger human future the Church will help to shape.

Lazarus At The Table
$19.95Add to cartLazarus at the Table is the fruit of more than two decades of instructing students in the social teachings of the Catholic Church. For most of these years Bernard Evans has taught graduate students. Lately he also teaches lay Catholics engaged in parish ministry and enrolled in diocesan ministry formation programs. This book is written specifically for the latter group.
Evans agrees with the bishops of the United States who insist that any Catholic education that does not include Catholic social teaching is not fully Catholic. And so he writes clearly, concisely, and convincingly about how Catholic social teaching addresses such contemporary issues as human dignity, abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, the death penalty, war, family, marriage, poverty, superfluous income, just wages, unions, peace, solidarity, and many more. Excerpts from the church’s official teachings in papal documents abound throughout the book.

Yahwehs Other Shoe
$14.95Add to cart“Only eternal life is worthy of the name,” writes Kilian McDonnell, O.S.B., in an elegy for a brother monk, and in his poetry one feels the working out of this life that begins with Adam and proceeds beyond our own span of time on earth. These poems breathe human air, but are always conscious of the larger picture of life in Christ.
“I wrestle with God ‘flesh to flesh, sweat to mystery,’ and I limp away.” This is how Father McDonnell describes his poetic project, and in these poems the reader attends a wrestling match of the highest order. He takes on the great themes of poetry: desire, mortality, love and age, brotherhood and God. Beginning with the figures of the Old and New Testament, he is aware of the human flailings, failings, and laughter in the stories as of what they say about God with us. Engaging with the events of our day, the great physical world around us, the intricate world of human relationships, and the spiritual journey of a monk, the poems continuously reveal what it means to be human.

Blessed Among Women
$12.49Add to cartThe Virgin Mary is the most honored and glorified saint in the Catholic Church. Catholic devotion to Mary is a worldwide phenomenon that continues to grow. Blessed Among Women takes a serious and critical look at how much devotion to the Virgin Mary is truly justified. This book also looks at how the Catholic Church views Mary’s role in God’s overall plan for our salvation and whether or not this view matches up with sacred scripture. It explores Catholic doctrines such as the Immaculate Conception, Perpetual Virginity and Assumption of Mary. It also explores more controversial doctrines such as Mediatrix of all Graces, Queen of heaven, and the unofficial Coredemptrix doctrine. Chapter eight examines the apparitions of the Virgin Mary and their influence on Church doctrine regarding Mary. The final two chapters turn our attention towards the importance of pursuing the truth on these issues, wherever that leads. For Protestants and Catholics alike, this book is an important exploration into the controversial Church doctrines regarding the Virgin Mary. It emphasizes why it is important for all Christians to examine what the word of God says about these doctrines, knowing that if we follow God’s word, we can experience the peace and joy of knowing that we are saved.
