Holy Web : Church And The New Universe Story
$25.00Add to cartThe Holy Web offers entree to the world revealed by contemporary science and the difference the new models of our life on earth make to understanding Christianity. The author shows how the church’s mission is to become and to nurture a dynamic “web of relationships” in which all humanity can find itself part of a wondrous whole. Wessels offers a profound reading of biblical categories. He shows convincingly that the new universe story made popular by Thomas Berry and Brian Swimme is not only open to religious interpretation but that the biblical symbols of creation, redemption, sin, grace, life and death, God-Christ-Spirit, faith, hope and love reveal the meaning of the universe to those with eyes to see and ears to hear.

Shadow Of His Wings
$18.95Add to cartWe had to do it. We had to reprint this book. Rarely has a book had such an impact on so many of us here at Ignatius Press. It is one of the most powerful and moving books we have come across. If you can only buy one book this season, this must be the one.
Here is the astonishing true story of the harrowing experiences of a young German seminarian drafted into Hitler’s dreaded SS at the onset of World War II. Without betraying his Christian ideals, against all odds, and in the face of Evil, Gereon Goldmann was able to complete his priestly training, be ordained, and secretly minister to German Catholic soldiers and innocent civilian victims caught up in the horrors of war. How it all came to pass will astound you.Father Goldmann tells of his own incredible experiences of the trials of war, his many escapes from almost certain death, and the diabolical persecution that he and his fellow Catholic soldiers encountered on account of their faith. What emerges is an extraordinary witness to the workings of Divine Providence and the undying power of love, prayer, faith, and sacrifice. Illustrated

Holy Preaching : The Sacramentality Of The Word In The Liturgical Assembly
$29.95Add to cartThe reform of the liturgy has dramatically changed the way Roman Catholics and all Christians understand their worship. The arena of the encounter has shifted from a passive experience of observation of the great Mysteries to one that invites active participation on many levels. Yet, the imagination of many who preach, preside, and gather to worship continues to be shaped by a passive model as well as by the notion of sacramental activity as a product to be received or given, rather than expressed and shared in communion with one another. In The Holy Preaching, Paul Janowiak deepens the discussion of Christ’s presence in the Word by offering critical reflection on the disparity between the theology and the practice of preaching and some explanation as to why that disparity exists.
Janowiak provides an overview of twentieth-century ecclesial sacramentality. He discusses the liturgical movements and important theological issues that led to reform and provides an in-depth analysis of how sacramental theologians Karl Rahner, Otto Semelroth, and Edward Schillebeeckx advanced the dialogue of Christ’s presence in the Word. He explains that despite the seminal work done by those sacramental theologians, a specifically liturgical understanding of Christ’s presence in the Word remains largely a theological concept and not a grace-filled reality. Part of this gap in theory and practice is the result of a fractured liturgical celebration. The Liturgy of the Word appears a distinct and often unrelated part of the entire eucharistic celebration. Using contemporary literary theory, Janowiak tackles this gap and roots out the foundations of this disparity between theology and its practice in worship. He inserts creative liturgical and sacramental theology into the literary particularities of sacred text, shared tradition, and communal hearing. From this a new lens on the sacramentality of the Word emerges.
The dialogue begun by sacramental theologians Rahner, Semelroth, and Schillebeeckx is re-opened by Janowiak. He examines the fruits of the liturgical reform of the past forty years and parallel movements in critical theory. The result is an understanding of Christ’s presence in the Word in a way that reveals the Mystery of God at work in the gathering of believers.

Premeditated Mercy
$16.95Add to cartWe normally hear the word premeditated in conjunction with murder. One has deliberated for a long time, covered every option, thought about every detail in taking another?s life. Premeditated mercy is the parallel opposite of premeditated murder. It implies a deliberate, thoughtful and willful act to give life: to forgive, to be reconciled, to live at peace with others, even those who have betrayed us, forsaken us, abandoned us, threatened us. In Premeditated Mercy Father Joe Nassal outlines a comprehensive and transformative spirituality of reconciliation. He offers a recipe for preparing a meal of mercy in the pattern of the Gospels. Jesus? challenge is clear enough: We are to reconcile with one another before bringing our gifts to the altar, for that table reflects God?s desire that we live in a holy communion with all people. Premeditated mercy suggests that in our silent prayer before the altar we ponder the breach in relationship and plot a strategy that will lead to reconciliation. Includes: 1.Revolutionary recipes for communal as well as one-on-one reconciliation 2.Scripturally sound, freshly creative ways to set the table for forgiveness and communion 3.How to find room at the table for all ? the beloved as well as the betrayer 4.How to find common ground amidst the variety of values and wounds we bring to the table 5.How we can make sacred connections within ourselves and in our relationships 6.Helps us see our shadows on Mercy Street 7.Helps us learn prayer from the crawl space 8.Helps us find our footing in the shadow of the cross Employing engaging stories from a variety of faith traditions, from real life as well as original tales, this poetic manual for becoming a minister of reconciliation brings a radically challenging spiritual work within the reach of each of us. A fresh Lenten resource for pastoral ministers, for disciples of the Preacher of the Sermon on the Mount and all who seek to live more fully the way of reconciliation.

Mystery Of Reason
$30.95Add to cartThe Mystery of Reason investigates the enterprise of human thought searching for God. People have always found stepping-stones to God’s existence carved in the world and in the human condition. This book examines the classical proofs of God’s existence, and affirms their continued validity. It shows that human thought can connect with God and with other aspects of religious experience. Moreover, it depicts how Christian faith is reasonable, and is neither blind nor naked. Without reason, belief would degenerate into fundamentalism; but without faith, human thought can remain stranded on the reef of its own self-sufficiency. This book proposes that the human mind must be in partnership with the human heart in any quest for God.

Gift Of Self In Marriage
$19.95Add to cartOne of the most striking features in the Catholic Church today is the ever-widening gap between its official teaching on marriage and sexual morality and the practice of most of its lay members. This book seeks to bridge this gap in two ways – it considers some of the tacit assumptions about marriage and sexual morality in today’s society, since these affect Catholics as much as everyone else; and it also considers the Church’s teaching in some of these areas and explores new ways of explaining it so that it will make sense to ordinary lay Catholics. The author draws on contemporary writing as well as bringing her own reflections and experience of living the Church’s teaching to bear on the subject.

I Asked For Wonder
$18.95Add to cart“Heschel, like his hasidic forebears, had the gift of combining profoundity with simplicity. He found just the right word not only to express what he thought but to evoke what he felt, startling the mind and delighting the heart as well as adressing and challenging the whole person. There are passages in this collection which, once encountered, will be taken up again and again, until they are absorbed into one’s inner life. Reading Heschel is to peer into the heart of that rarest of human phenomena, the holy man.” With these words, Rabbi Samuel H. Dresner, an early student and longtime personal friend, introduces his collection of the aphorisms and spiritual wisdom of Abraham Joshua Heschel. Drawing upon virtually all of Herchel’s published work, Rabbi Dresner has an unerring eye for the heart of the matter: brief, gemlike statements that have both the universal appeal and the element of surprise of all great wisdom literature.

Epistemological Principles And Roman Catholic Rites
$39.95Add to cartOrdination is a complex process that links ministry, local church, confession of faith, and communion. This process is communitarian, liturgical and juridical, and through these traits, sacramental. Father Puglisi explores the notion that Christian (both Catholic and Protestant) ordination cannot be reduced to a simple rite of installation or to the acceptance of a charge, but is an ecclesial process whereby a Christian receives a charisma for the edification of the Church.
Father Puglisi analyzes the liturgical and canonical institutions in three periods (the ancient and Medieval period, the period of the Reformation, and the contemporary period) to recover an understanding of the complex structure of ordination and the implicit connection between ordained ministry and the structuring of the Church. Volume I explores the meaning of the episcopal and presbyteral ministry according to the ordination rituals from the early Church (the apostolic tradition) until the eighth century, and the resulting structuring of the Church. Chapters study documents from that time period and their theological reflection.
Separate volumes will address each of the three periods. A fourth volume will offer an English translation of the liturgical rites examined in the first three volumes. It will also include an extensive bibliography of sources and secondary literature, a comparison of the structure of the two liturgical offices of ordination/installation of a bishop and of a presbyter, of the prayers of ordination or installation, of the examination of the elect and of the use of biblical readings in each of the liturgical rites.

Crucial Bridge : The Elijah Elisha Narrative As An Interpretative Synthesis
$16.95Add to cartThe Elijah-Elisha narrative (1 Kgs 16:29-2 Kgs 13) is the most underestimated text in the Bible. Far from being a disparate collection, it is actually a carefully crafted double drama that both mirrors life and synthesizes systematically the entire Primary History (Genesis-Kings). In a bold hermeneutical move it transforms the language of historiography-of patriarchs and kings-into the language of prophetic biography.
This prophetic biography, rooted in historiography, later becomes the evangelists’ primary literary model. The Elijah-Elisha narrative is the crucial bridge between the foundational narratives of Judaism and Christianity.
Since the 1970s there has been increasing evidence that Scripture texts that at first sight appear fragmented are in fact unified. Judges is a striking example of this. Because of the earlier exegetical models used, Judges was often regarded as a collection of rugged traditions that were independent of one another. Now, however, these apparently disconnected stories are intimately interconnected. Brodie explains that, as with earlier research on Judges, the quest for history-for underlying traditions-has tended to obscure the existing narrative account. In particular, the Elijah-Elisha narrative has often been read as consisting largely of two independent units, two cycles of traditions. The Elijah-Elisha narrative is indeed twofold-it clearly highlights two main prophets-but it is also a careful unity, as closely knit as Judges is now seen to be.
